Morrissey and Robert Smith of The Cure talk about "Imaginary Feud." Posted on 15 Jun, 2021
Robert Smith of The Cure has spoken out about his "imaginary conflict" with Morrissey.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the two musicians had a verbal spat started by Morrissey's ever-acidic labeling of Robert Smith as a "whinge bag."
“Morrissey's so depressing that if he doesn't (kill) himself soon, I probably will...” answered the Cure singer, who is no slouch in the barbed comment stakes.
Robert Smith said in 2019 that he "never understood" the feud, but added, "It's far from important anymore."
In an interview with the Sunday Times, the goth legend branded it an "imaginary rivalry," indicating that observers needed it to become "a soap opera."
“I wasn't a big fan of The Smiths,” he admitted. “They were only in competition for a short time. But more than that, it didn't strike a chord with me. I didn't loathe them personally since I didn't know who they were.”
